In a world where everything is customized and made for order, why can the same not be true for caregiving for a resident requiring dementia care? Can a one size fit all model ever work in a memory care setting? The answer is no, absolutely not.
Each resident requires an individual dementia care
All residents come from a different walk of life bringing with them different habits, behaviors and interests. Each one has past trauma and certain triggers as well as likes and comforts. For one it is insulting to be calling sweetheart. While for another it will offer a layer of support and trust. Getting to know each resident as an individual and taking the time to learn their history prior to the diagnoses is crucial in creating a well detailed and rounded care plan. Once the information is gathered, the facility needs to start working on a person centered care plan.
Each part of providing care should be centered around the resident, rather than what is convenient for the staff.
What time do they like to wake up and go to bed? Is there a gender preference for a staff member who will provide personal hygiene care? What are some known behaviors and what helps navigate them? Are there certain activities that are liked and disliked? Knowing the answers to the above mentioned questions will help create a trusting and safe environment. The staff will feel comfortable taking care of the resident and the resident will feel safe seeing that their habits and interests are addressed. More info can be found here: https://www.alz.org/
Assisted Living on Broadway puts person centered care as top priority to ensure a successful partnership with our families and the loved ones that are trusted in our care. Each care plan is carefully put together to reflect the individual it is custom made for. No two residents are the same, and their care reflects that. Dementia takes so much from the resident, and it is our job as care providers to maintain whatever we can to ensure a high quality of life.
