Caregiver Burnout is in fact a very real diagnoses when it comes to Dementia care.
Many people fall into the role of the caregiver for their loved one whether parent or spouse not by choice. Being a full time caregiver can carry immense weight and burden on the person often taking a tole on their own health, well being and relationships. Recognizing when one has reached their limits and needs a break is crucial. Not just for themselves but also for the one they are taking care of.
What are some signs of caregiver burnout?
It is very important to recognize the signs of burnout and seek help immediately as placement of a resident or setting up needed resources may take a while. The most common sign is extreme exhaustion. Caretaker is so tired from having to be on constant guard and call that they themselves start having health complications. Another common sign is depression. Dementia is a very difficult diagnoses for both the person and their loved one. The person with the diagnoses is changing and the family and loved ones begin to grieve the loss of their loved one that they once knew. Being constantly around the diagnoses and the progression of it, is very sad and often leads to depression. Agitation and frustration are also common signs of caregiver burnout.
Dementia is difficult as the behaviors become challenging and exhausting.
Caregivers who do not get the need break can become angry and take out their frustration on the person. What are some options when feeling this way? Many agencies exist that can assist with providing at home care. Unfortunately usually this is not a service covered by insurance. But if able to pay privately it can be very beneficial to have someone come for a few hours a day so the care taker can get a well needed break. Often many facilities will offer respite stays where a resident with dementia can be put their for a time being so the family can either go out of town or have a longer break. When all these are no longer an option, many facilities exist that specialize in dementia care.
