Activities are a crucial part in dementia care
Having enough stimulation is detrimental In helping a resident thrive and keep from a rapid decline. However, too much stimulation is just as bad as no stimulation as it can become overwhelming and stressful. So where is the perfect balance? How do we stimulate enough with activities for dementia without creating chaos?
In general, having two organized activities a day is considered a healthy amount. One in the first half of the day and one in the second. The activities for dementia should be different from day to day to try and grab everyone’s attention and interest. Having an appropriate level of physical activity is crucial. Whether it is daily walks, sit and be fit, or a ball toss, we must always incorporate different strengthening exercise. Living a sedentary lifestyle can cause muscle weakness and result in loss of mobility.
Music is a language spoken and understood by all
Even those who have lost all ability to speak. Music therapy and music activities such as karaoke, sing a long, or just having music play in the background is both comforting and stimulating. Music played should reflect the appropriate age of the residents with songs they recognize from different stages of their lives.
Animal therapy is another great activity. Whether it is dogs, cats or other pets, the love of an animal is both needed and wanted. Being able to hold an animal in your lap or pet one, causes relieve of anxiety and stress. Find more information at https://www.alz.org/
